Angry Picardo says UN has no excuses to ignore Gibraltar

IN a strongly worded speech, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo told the chairman of the UN Special committee on decolonisation in New York that he had no choice but to visit Gibraltar, and gave him a first class ticket to help him on his way.
Picardo is angry that the UN has dragged its heels on the matter, and has failed to officially visit the Rock to assess its statehood. The ticket, he said, gave them no excuses.
Quoting several paragraphs of the UN document ‘Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples,´ Picardo said: “Tell us whether Gibraltar reaches the maximum possible level of self-government short of independence or what else is missing in order that you determine we have reached that state of political autonomy which is necessary to be de-listed by you.”
He left them in no doubt that, as he put it, “we are not going to go away Mr Chairman.”
Picardo concluded by telling him: “The Gibraltar ball is now firmly in your court. Have the courage to run with it. Or leave it to those of us who do.”
