THE first house in Spain made of industrialised straw panels is being built in Zamudio, Vizcaya, and the new material has been presented at Bioterra and BioNavarra ecological fairs. The straw panels, created by EcoPaja, are reported to allow improved insulation and reduce energy consumption by up to 90 per cent. The units are built with a solid wooden structure filled with compacted straw, which can even be used for external walls. They can be used both on outer walls and for structures, the company explained.Along with the health benefits of using toxin-free natural products, the new material is reported to provide optimal comfort and ease of construction.A 120-square-metre home can be created in about four weeks in a workshop and built on site in approximately three days with costs of around €1,000 per square metre, EcoPaja manager Jose Veiga explained.
