CONTRASTS: This year the land was littered but the sea was cleaner.

ALTEA Yacht Club’s spring clean of the waters off the Serra Gelada has shown that this year the sea is much cleaner than in the past.
The XV Conference organised by the Nautico de Altea Environmental Group consisted of two teams comprising 50 volunteers, who rolled up their sleeves and set about cleaning both the shoreline and the sea bed.
From 9am on June 14 the volunteers were busy wading through the water cleaning the area from the Albir lighthouse to the beach. The teams confirmed that most of the rubbish was collected on land. A spokesperson said: “It was mostly plastic bottles, bits of iron, furniture, all sorts of debris.” Among the garbage there was even a large electric toy car.
On the bright side, the sea bed was much cleaner, with just a few small bags, plastic bottles and some fishing lines which the workers surmised might have been dragged in from recent storms.
The expedition culminated with a snorkel tour for 25 children under the supervision of a professional diver.
