Police respond to a shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

POLICE responded to a shooting last night at a church in Charleston, South Carolina (USA) in which nine individuals were killed. The shooter, a clean-shaven, white male in his 20s, is still at large. Police chief Gregory Mullen considers the incident a hate crime.
Church members were holding a worship meeting last night when the gunman opened fire, killing eight people and wounding others. One victim later died at the hospital, raising the toll to nine deaths thus far. The church’s pastor, Senator Clementa Pinckney, was one of the individuals killed in the attack.
The church – founded in 1816 – is one of the oldest historic African-American churches in the US and civil rights leader Martin Luther King gave a speech there in 1962.
