WATER’S EDGE: Easier to reach with a walkway
GOOD beach weather came early to Almeria this year but beach walkways were late arriving. So early in the summer the sand still does not burn and is comfortable to walk on, but the lack of walkways can be a problem for the disabled or beachgoers struggling with pushchairs to the water’s edge.An Almeria teacher involved in an outing for disabled pupils at the beginning of the month expressed surprise at not finding the catwalks.“Almeria City beaches had neither walkways, awnings nor other beach equipment,” the teacher said. “On the other hand, an area had been prepared for a beach-tennis tournament with tiers of seating.”Two of the pupils were in wheelchairs and others had mobility problems but she and other adults in the party were determined that the children should still enjoy their day at the beach. The only solution was to carry them, and all their belongings, down to the water’s edge. The summer season might not have officially begun at the time, the teacher pointed out: “But didn’t city hall have enough initiative to look at the magnificent weather and get the beaches ready earlier?”
