ALCOY City Council with the cooperation of the Department of Social Welfare has launched a programme of free summer school activities for 150 children from low-income families. Daily meals will be included in the programme, ensuring that children’s nutritional needs are met.
The Councillor for Social Welfare explained that the ultimate goal was that children were guaranteed three meals each day as well as plenty of activities to keep them occupied throughout the summer like any other child. So far 115 children are booked to attend morning sessions only and 40 full time.
For parents who are unemployed or in low-paid work, the free summer programme is vital as children no longer have a nutritional meal that is provided during school term time.
The summer school schedule this year has not been extended to the month of August as the demand has been minimal. However, the Social Welfare Department has confirmed that despite there being no summer school in session, meals will be provided for children in need through their emergency department.
