A MIRACLE mum and her one-year-old son have been found alive five days following a plane crash in the jungle of Western Colombia. Eighteen-year-old Maria Nelly Murillo was reported to have sustained burns and other injuries while her baby son was unharmed.
The twin-engine plane came down in dense jungle on Saturday, and rescue crews found the body of the pilot in the craft. A search mission was launched for the passengers, but after five days the crew admitted they were shocked to find them alive.
Colonel Hector Carrascal, of the Colombian air force, told AFP news agency: “It’s a miracle. It is a very wild area and it was a catastrophic accident.” He added that he believed that the young mother’s “spirit” must have kept the child going.
The pair were rushed to hospital by helicopter Quibdo. The investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
