THE Legion Brigade (Brileg) based in Viator will be returning to Lebanon as UN peacekeepers. The Brileg soldiers are currently undergoing endurance training at Serrania de Ronda (Malaga), headed by their commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Juan Jesus Martin Cabrero who has fully participated in the exercises. The Viator troops were first in Lebanon seven years ago and the instruction received in Malaga focused on the mission that is due to begin after the summer. At present Spain controls a strip of territory in south-east Lebanon, coordinated from Miguel de Cervantes base in Marjayoun. This is a complicated position, owing to dormant conflict with Israel on one side and proximity to the Syrian border and the growing influence of ISIS terrorism.
