PEÑON D’IFACH: Affords a fantastic view of Calpe.
CALPE’S Peñon de Ifach, which attracts 130,000 tourists every year and is the most visited natural park in the Valencian Region, has closed.Works that were in progress to improve its safety have now been mothballed at the start of the busiest tourist season of the year.Determined to prevent access to the beauty spot, the authorities have put up a stone wall and metal door across the tunnel leading to El Carabiners.Residents feel the issue of safety at the Peñon has been mishandled and the access has been rendered unsafe through lack of timely maintenance, saying that nothing has been done in the area since 2005. As a result, between 2005 and 2015 the stones underfoot have become polished, slippery and treacherous, they claim.Despite the signs that say the area is closed, inquisitive tourists are still venturing to explore the area, some with children.
