ESCORCA has obtained one of the most prestigious awards honouring its excellent performance in the realm of environmentally friendly tourism.The town has been certified a ‘Biosphere World Class Destination’, bestowed by the United Nations’ heritage body Unesco and the World Tourism Organisation (OMT).With this award, Escorca has become the first place in the Balearic Region to make it to the select group of 20 Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Destinations, together with others including Yellowstone (US), Lanzarote (Spain), Cusco (Peru) and Delta del Okavango (Botswana).The title guarantees responsible and sustainable tourism development in economic, socio-cultural and environmental terms.In a statement, representatives of the local council explained that their main goal after receiving this title would be to continue working towards a quality tourism which fosters a balance between residents and tourism, boosting local economy and employment, guaranteeing sustainability and environmental respect.
