NO children in Elche will be left without a meal as the council will maintain and improve the guaranteed meal scheme for the summer. The council’s department of Education and Citizen Wellbeing has agreed to increase the budget allocated to guarantee a meal at the school or taken to their homes during summer for all those families at risk of poverty. The novelty, said the council, is that the siblings of those children who benefit from the scheme will also be able to eat at the school, even if they are not school-aged children. With an increase in budget of €3,000, the project will cost a total of €93,000 this year.“We thought it was a nonsense to leave unattended the children of poorer families just because they are not yet in school, while their siblings could benefit from this scheme,” said Councillor Teresa Macia.
