SPAIN’S music festival season is underway with a swing, and the weekend of July 10 and 11 sees the turn of one of the funkiest events of the summer, Imagina Funk, in Torres near Jaen.
In the most beautiful surroundings, this gathering attracts international funk bands and musicians from across Spain. This year, the acts include Fred Wesley, an American trombonist who’s played with James Brown and Parliament-Funkadelic, with his band the New JBs, and Noumoucounda Cissoko, who brings the best African beats all the way from Senegal.
The weekend also has DJs until dawn, and the conclusion of a national battle of the bands. Like many Spanish festivals, the tickets cost peanuts compared to British events, at €30 in advance or €40 on the day, with far less chance of losing your wellies in a muddy swamp. Camping at the venue adds just €10 to your ticket, although don’t forget to bring a passport or Spanish DNI.
