CONFUSION has arisen over who is to clean the riverbed sludge and waste gathering along the River Segura. The debate over who is responsible for its cleaning as the river passes through Orihuela is back on the table after councillor for the Environment, Miguel Angel Moreno (PP), said: “As far as I know the Segura basin has historically been responsible for carrying it out.”It comes following criticism by the Aguas de Callosa de Segura claiming the accumulation of sludge has blocked part of the entry of water along irrigation channels in the southern part of the Vega Baja. Moreno said: “This is a recurring problem, for which we must find a permanent solution.”The council has now requested a meeting with the Confederacion Hidrografica del Segura (CHS) to try and agree on who is responsible for cleaning.
