Alfarnate holds referendum in search of a shield and a flag

Alfarnate’s old coat of arms

AXARQUIA town Alfarnate is about to create its very own coat of arms and flag, after decades using symbols with no connection with the village.
The town council has put forward a motion to hold a referendum so that all residents of the town can decide on these two important identity signs.
“We have decided to allow citizens to choose amongst three different designs which have been created with the help of a local historian,” said Mayor Salvador Urdiales. “During the past week, coinciding with the Cultural Week, citizens have been able to vote, with such a success that we decided to extend the voting period.”
Mayor Urdiales explained that the expert in history has dived into the complex history of Alfarnate to create a unique, historically accurate design. He has also started working on the design of a flag, which will include the traditional Andalucian colour of green, and yellow, to honour the cereals which were the main source of income for the town for centuries.
“Once we have chosen the coat of arms and the flag, we will send all paperwork to the Junta de Andalucia, which will make them official,” said the mayor.
