IMPOUNDED: Launch and 600 kilos of hashish.
A DRIVER who does a u-turn on seeing the Guardia Civil looks suspicious. It is no different at sea, especially when a boat’s crew or passengers throw packages overboard on sighting a Guardia Civil maritime unit.
Officers patrolling Cabo de Gata began following a small launch that was hugging the coast and laden with well-wrapped brown packages that were the giveaway size and shape of smuggled hashish.
The boat made a classic u-turn on spotting the Guardia Civil boat and its two passengers began throwing their cargo overboard but were soon intercepted. The two men aboard the boat were arrested, its cargo impounded and the floating packages recovered, a Guardia Civil spokesman announced.
The boat was carrying 600 kilos of hashish split into 20 packages but was so small and light that it was unlikely to have crossed from Morocco. The case remains open as investigators trace its origin and destination, sources said.
