Care of Penyal d’Ifach to be shared

CALPE’S Councillor for the Environment Ana Sala and the General Directorate for the environment have arrived at a compromise for the continued maintenance of the Penyal d’Ifach following the disastrous closure of one of the region’s most popular tourist attractions at the start of the busiest holiday season of the year.

The aim is to establish the safest and swiftest programme of maintenance to enable the re-opening of the Penyal. The ministry forced its closure on grounds of public safety in April.

Improvements in safety at the Penyal are urgent, especially as it seems all efforts to keep the tunnel entrance closed have failed, with tourists gaining daily access to areas pronounced unsafe underfoot.

Plans are also in hand to request ministry assistance in the maintenance of Calpe’s famous Salinas wetlands, which were at risk recently when a major pump failed, leaving water levels too low to sustain various species of birdlife.
