VILLARICOS archaeological site has fallen into a deplorable state and although opened to the public a year ago, is not fit for visits, the council has complained.
Indalecio Modesto, Cuevas del Almanzora’s Tourism and Culture councillor, has reported that the heritage site, which dates back to the Copper Age, has been completely abandoned and desperately needs maintenance and cleaning work.
Staff is also needed, Modesto said, as the information centre currently has just one volunteer who is not always available.
The council has been in touch with Almeria Culture Department and has asked for at least one of the underground galleries to be conditioned for visits, and has announced its intention to hold a guided visit on August 22 which will be filmed to gather support for a €50,000 conservation project.
