FED UP: While Alora has been given a theatre (pictured), Alhaurin de la Torre is still waiting.

A MALAGA town mayor has put his foot down and said he intends to get a municipal theatre, “with or without the regional government.”
Joaquin Villanova, mayor of Alhaurin de la Torre, is fed up with waiting for financing to be approved for the town’s theatre, plans for which were drawn up more than 10 years ago. He says he won’t wait five or six years and if the Junta de Andalucia regional government doesn’t get a move on he will go ahead anyway and fight to get the money back afterwards.
“It’s an important project and it’s already been delayed more than 10 years,” he said.
Although the council has asked over and over for the financing to be organised since the first plans were drawn up, nothing has happened.
“It’s embarrassing to be the only town with more than 20,000 inhabitants that doesn’t have a theatre. The Junta de Andalucia owes us one. They’ve been avoiding the subject and making excuses for three years,” Villanova said.
While Alhaurin de la Torre has been waiting, theatres have been built in other parts of the province including Alora, Alhaurin el Grande and Cartama, and another one started in Coin, Villanova complained.
