ALICANTE has once again excelled itself export-wise during the first half of the year, registering an increase in overseas sales that doubled the national average, the latest figures reveal.
Along with tourism, exports are the main engine of the local economy with more than €2.8 billion worth registered between January and June, ICEX export institute has reported, 9.8 per cent more than the same period last year.
Industry has jumped ahead of agriculture, with shoes the star item registering more than €783 million up to June (19 per cent more than last year).
France continues to be the main customer for Alicante factories, although Germany was the country with the greatest increase in orders (more than 40 per cent).
Countries outside the Eurozone also registered increases in purchases linked to devaluation of the euro.
