RESIDENTS of Velez-Malaga in extreme poverty who cannot afford to pay bills will now receive a bit of extra help.

Velez-Malaga Council has approved an amendment to the emergency aid regulation through which families at risk will receive help to pay their electricity and water bills.

Head of the Social Services Department, Zoila Martin, explained in a press release that this measure extends aid, which until now only covered food expenses and help to pay rent. The new amendment is expected to be officially approved at the plenary session scheduled to be held at the end of August.

“This modification will allow the local government to help those residents who could not pay their bills, and until now were being helped by charity organisations such as Caritas or Red Cross,” she said.
