A LOCAL police officer rescued a 32-year-old Ukrainian woman after she nearly drowned in a deep area of the Frigiliana Higueron river.

The woman told Spanish daily SUR that she was swimming when she started feeling unwell and passed out.

When she woke up, she was already safe on a rock.

The Local Police officer, Francisco José Gallardo, who had attended the area for a traffic related issue, saw the woman floating and immediately jumped into the water to rescue her. He performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and was able to bring her back to consciousness. She was then taken to Frigiliana Square in the patrol car, where an ambulance was waiting.

The hero explained that bathing in the area is absolutely prohibited, but that the fence and signs expressing so were broken at the time of the accident.
