HORRIFIED viewers of American TV station WDBJ7 could not believe their eyes when gunfire rang out during a televised interview at a shopping centre in Moneta, Virginia.
News reporter Alison Parker, 24, was interviewing Vicki Gardner of the local Chamber of Commerce in a morning news sequence early on Wednesday (August 26). Screams were heard as the camera falls to the ground and the next scene was of a stunned anchorwoman back in the studio.
Ms Parker and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, were killed, the station later announced, whilst Ms Gardner, who was shot in the back, is in hospital undergoing surgery.
Local police are searching for a suspect, but no name has been released nor as yet any indication if the shooter was known to the victims.
