Lord Luce appointed Chancellor of the University of Gibraltar

FORMER Governor of Gibraltar Lord Luce has been appointed Chancellor of the new University of Gibraltar. Minister for Education, Gilbert Licudi QC, announced the appointment on Thursday (August 27). 

Lord Luce is an independent peer in the House of Lords, and as a Conservative MP was a minister in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He has also served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Buckingham.

Mr Licudi said he was delighted with the appointment: “With his enormous experience particularly in government, with the royal household and in higher education, he brings unique attributes and experience to this post. He will undoubtedly prove to be an asset and an excellent ambassador for the University of Gibraltar.”

Lord Luce said: “It is an immense privilege for me to accept Mr Licudi’s invitation to become Chancellor of the new University of Gibraltar. It is a most exciting and well-prepared venture with a fine team of academics and an excellent system of governance. 

“It is a pleasure to be able to renew my former link with Gibraltar through the University. My wife Rose and I retain a great affection and admiration for all the people of Gibraltar.”

The university is due to be formally opened on September 21, and its first term begins on September 28.
