IN A joint operation with French police, the National Police force has caught four dangerous criminals from France who were hiding out on the Costa del Sol after kidnapping a businessman and holding him for almost two months.
The group, who travelled to Spain with the businessman after allegedly kidnapping him in southern France, spent time at the man’s property in Platja d’Aro (Girona) where they kept him chained up in the basement and forced him to hand over bank details, open new accounts and make purchases over the internet including a million euros worth of gold from Belgium.
Eventually the group moved south to San Pedro de Alcantara, where the businessman was eventually released on July 13 after he was persuaded not to inform the authorities and urged to pay his captors €100,000 per week.
Days before the kidnapping, the four men – who are believed to have met in jail while doing time for robbery and manslaughter and one of whom had escaped before completing his sentence – stole guns from a store in Carmaux, France, and injured police officers, leading to an international arrest order being issued after they fled the scene.
