Sports coach imprisoned in Gandia

ONLINE DANGER: Social media sites were used to entrap children.

A FOOTBALL sports coach from Gandia has been sentenced to seven-and-ahalf years in prison on several counts of corruption of minors, indecent exposure, and promotion of prostitution and for soliciting sex from minors.

Posing as a fictitious teenage girl named Lorena, the man used social media sites such as facebook to find and contact his victims. Using webcams he sought out children and began conversations with them. Gaining their trust, he eventually asked for pictures of the children without their shirt or naked.

During a search of his home and computer, detectives uncovered a number of naked images of children aged between 11 and 13 years old.

Proposals of prostitution were even made to some of the children, where the man offered €50 if they agreed; however, his proposals were repeatedly rejected by many of the victims.

According to data retrieved, the illicit activity began in late 2010 and continued until he was arrested in 2012.

The 33-year-old Gandia man admitted to the charges, while his defence argued that he suffered from a mental disorder, which resulted in his sentence being reduced from 10 to seven-and-a-half years.

However, once he leaves prison he will be on probation for a further seven years.
