Life on Mars?

NASA announced on Monday September 28 that they have discovered evidence of running water on Mars. The discovery points to the possibility of alien life forms once living on the planet.

Michael Meyer, NASA lead scientist, told reporters: “For the first time, we have found evidence of the agent which has allowed water to flow on the surface of Mars.”

Satellite imagery has identified narrow streaks, usually less than five metres wide, which appear on slopes during warm seasons and then fade when conditions become cooler.

NASA is planning to send investigators to Mars to examine the areas now known to contain water. Earlier this year NASA scientists revealed evidence of an ocean that might have covered half of the planet’s northern hemisphere in the distant past.

Mars may well have been, billions of years ago, a planet similar to Earth. If there was once life on Mars, did any survive? Can the planet support life today? We are now closer to answering these questions than ever before.
