BOMB: GEAS divers inspect Civil War relic
SPECIALISTS from the La Algameca naval base (Cartagena) detonated a bomb discovered off Almeria’s El Zapillo beach.
It was located two days previously by amateur divers one kilometre offshore at a depth of 15 metres. They immediately alerted the Guardia Civil who sent divers from the GEAS unit to photograph and assess the 80 centimetre bomb, which is believed to date from the 1936-1939 Civil War.
The Maritime Action unit’s Operations and Observation centre was warned of the find and the area within a 500 metre radius of the bomb was cordoned off. A Navy bomb disposal unit arrived the following day to detonate the bomb in a controlled explosion and remove the resulting debris.
