THE Guardia Civil arrested 44-year-old British alleged drug baron Robert Dawes in Benalmadena on Thursday (November 12), police sources have reported.
Dawes, considered by Europol to be one of the main UK drug lords and one of the top 10 in Europe, was arrested by the Guardia Civil’s UCO operations unit after extensive searches of the family home in Benalmadena.
The arrest was carried out under a warrant from the French authorities.
Since 2006 Dawes has been investigated a number of times by the police unit, and was identified as the alleged leader of a British drug gang under Operation Halbert in 2007, but avoided arrest and fled to Dubai.
Although he was extradited to Spain in April 2011, Spanish courts had to shelve the case due to a lack of information from the British authorities, the Guardian newspaper reported at the time.
