THE average gross salary in the Balearic Islands in 2014 was €1,707 per month, which is €173 less than the national average.
According to figures from the National Institute of Statistics, this puts the region amongst the five with the lowest average gross salaries in Spain. It had fallen €46.4 from 2013.
Some 65,000 workers in the Balearic Islands earn less than €1,000 per month, often because they only have part time contracts.
This supports information provided by charities such as Caritas, who report that there is a new class of ‘poor workers’ who although they have a job and a salary, still need help to make it through the month.
