Costa proves it really was a grand collection

BABY FOOD: One of the most needed items this year.

THE people of the Costa del Sol and the rest of Malaga Province have once again proved their generosity by surpassing last year’s donations during Bancosol food bank’s Gran Recogida food drive at the weekend.

The food bank had, after managing to collect 680,000 kilos of food at last year’s drive, decided to go for more this year and although it failed to reach the ambitious goal of 750,000 kilos it has reported that people gave a very respectable 713,000 kilos over the two-day campaign.

More than 5,000 volunteers staffed collection points in supermarkets and urged shoppers to pop a little something into their trolleys for those in need. Special emphasis was placed this year on baby food and non-perishable foodstuffs which didn’t need much preparation as, volunteers explained, those in need often don’t have the means to cook the food they are kindly given.

Now stage two of the annual campaign has kicked in and more volunteers are busy at Bancosol’s warehouse classifying donations and preparing them for distribution to the more than 550,000 people fed by associations the food bank distributes to all over the province.
