RIVER SECO: Revamp is on the cards.
THE River Monnegre could become a park. The Mancomunidad Alacanti – six municipalities in the Alicante area – first debated the plan in 2009.
This is now viable, thanks to the upriver water treatment plant which has encouraged the return of vegetation and ducks as well as fish to prey on the mosquitoes that would otherwise plague the area.
The project would begin in Campello where the river acquires the name of Rio Seco and reaches the sea. This section would include gardens extending from the TRAM track and Avenida Jaume I in Campello with an underpass beneath the railway line. Paths planted with native trees, shrubs and flowers would follow the river to San Juan and Muchamiel.
This initial phase would conclude in the Moli Nou in Muchamiel where the first of the river’s three small dams is located.
