Spain has experienced the same development of consumerism as Britain

TWO days without being able to shop proved to be too much for the hundreds of people who took to the shops last Sunday.

Both Christmas Day and Boxing Day saw everything closed in Mallorca, causing withdrawal symptoms for those addicted to shopping.

Spain has experienced the same development of consumerism as Britain, albeit at a later date. The last two decades have turned what was a traditional religious event into a consumer’s paradise, namely Christmas.

The dates for Christmas this year meant that Sunday was the first day when shoppers were able to get their fix, although when shops opened in the morning, there were more staff than there were shoppers.

By the afternoon however, this had changed with families out in force enjoying some special offers to be found.

Local businesses have had to compete with the giants, such as Carrefour and Al Campo, but all predict that the New Year’s sales will be good.

Some businesses took advantage of the dates and offered discounts on many items, but the majority of discounts will be found after the Three Kings have been on January 6.
