VOLUNTARY DONATIONS: Give blood, give life.
DESPITE the business of the time of year, 47 people took the time to donate blood on Christmas Eve at El Salon Social El Cirer in La Nucia. In fact, 52 people turned up, but five were found to be ineligible.
This was the sixth consecutive year that the Transfusion Centre of Valencia held an extra session in the run-up to Christmas in La Nucia. The session was dubbed ‘poinsettia’ and used the tag line ‘Esta Navidad, regala vida’ (This Christmas, give life).
In Alicante, 300 donations are needed daily in order to meet demand. Blood cannot be manufactured. The only way to get it is through voluntary, unpaid donations.
To give blood, you need to be over 18 and under 65, and weigh more than 50 kilos. There is no need to fast beforehand, and having high cholesterol does not prevent you from donating.
Men can donate blood four times a year and women three times. You do not need to book in advance. Simply turn up at the next session. However there is an EU ruling followed in Spain which states that anyone who lived in the UK for six straight months between 1980 and 1996 cannot donate blood.
There will be another opportunity to donate in La Nucia, at the Centro de Salud, on Monday, January 18. The session will run from 5pm to 8.30pm.
