MUNICIPAL MARKET: Some PSOE councillors feel that something needs to be done about the situation.

DURING the last term, one of the most talked-about themes in the area of La Herradura was the situation of the Municipal Market of Almuñecar.

In November of 2012, the existing car park underneath the market was closed, which caused a severe lack of parking in the area. Consequently, there was a notable drop in the amount of clients in the market, which caused sales to plummet and obliged some of the vendors to close their stands. It also provoked a loss of business in the whole neighbourhood.

In a recent court case, it was declared that the car park should not have been constructed in the first place, but many are still not satisfied. The lack of solutions on behalf of the town council has caused Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE) members in Almuñecar to demand the mayor to do something about the situation.

PSOE Councillor Sergio Garcia Alabarce has pointed out that the facilities of the market are suffering from the abandonment on behalf of the town council, and there has even been an increase in theft due to lack of security.

Alabarce said the market is deteriorating day by day and the situation is very unfair to the many families of the vendors and local shopkeepers.
