Joaquin Guzman under arrest
IN JULY of 2015, Joaquin Guzman, nicknamed ‘El Chapo’ (shorty) escaped from a maximum security jail in Mexico by digging an escape tunnel in the showers.
Since that time, the Mexican authorities have been desperately trying to find the leader of the drug cartel who had previously escaped from another prison in 2001 and had remained free on that occasion for 13 years.
According to the Mexican Attorney General, the government became aware of his whereabouts because he had contacted a number of actors and producers to discuss the possibility of making a film based on his life and armed with this information, units raided a property in the city of Los Mochis in the state of Sinaloa where he is seen as something of a hero because of the work his cartel offered.
After a gun battle in which six people are reported to have been killed El Chapo was re-arrested on January 8 and returned to Altiplano prison.
