Filipino seaman dies after evacuation from Greek vessel

Unidentified merchant ship off of Gibraltar.

A GREEK ship the Capitan Vassilus made a stop in Gibraltar on a journey from the Ivory Coast to Romania on January 10, to ask for assistance for a sick Filipino crew member, who was transferred to St Bernard’s Hospital.

Unfortunately the man died en route before he could be treated and the coroner will need to establish the cause of his death.

The vehicle in which he was travelling, and all equipment connected with the man, have been decontaminated in accordance with procedures in case of possibly infectious diseases, and the Gibraltar Fire and Rescue Service personnel are under the supervision of Infection Control staff as a precautionary measure.

The government of Gibraltar confirms that all officers involved in this matter acted in accordance with safety protocols, and there is no cause for worry as far as they or residents of Gibraltar are concerned.
