YOUNG people with autism will have the chance to reap tremendous benefits from regular swimming lessons in the Vera municipal pool, under new plans by the Reyes Catolicos primary school.
The weekly classes will help the students improve their motor skills, balance and awareness, as well as assisting with tension and anxiety, and enhancing independence.
Education councillor Maria Montoya has lauded the project, named ‘Piscina en el aula’ (Class in the pool), as important “to stimulate physical and cognitive development and elevate levels of self-esteem and motivation.” Just small tasks such as dressing independently can make a huge difference to autistic students over time.
