A TAXI driver from Barcelona has been fined €100 after video cameras caught him swerving to avoid an injured biker lying on the road but failing to stop to provide assistance.
The 47-year-old cabbie was identified after camera recordings showed that he was the first person to witness an accident at about 4pm on February 16, between a motorbike and two other vehicles on the C-31 road near Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona.
The driver is seen to slow and swerve to avoid hitting the victim, but is then seen to continue on his way, supposedly after deciding his fare was worth more than his legal obligation as a driver to stop and help.
The only reason he has not been arrested, Mossos d’Esquadra police officers stated, is that the other two drivers involved in the accident and those behind the taxi did stop and help the unconscious man.
To avoid similar fines, the police remind all drivers that, in the case of an accident, they are obliged by law to stop, protect, report and help.
