POLICE officers have seized €14 million worth of loose leaves in the biggest tobacco bust in Spanish history. A joint operation pounced on three sites in Almeria Province.
A criminal organisation was caught with the tobacco, which they were manufacturing in three industrial units, one in Benahadux and two in Huercal de Almeria. They profited from the tobacco by distributing it to different businesses, primarily in Andalucia, and to individuals all over Spain by messenger.
In addition to the 88 tonnes of loose tobacco seized, police officers discovered numerous rolling cigarettes, 20 machines for rolling, cutting, and weighing tobacco, packages of aromatic products used to simulate the flavour of the determined brands, vehicles, and receipts.
The quantity seized was the equivalent of eight million packets of cigarettes. Six people have been arrested for their involvement in the illegal operation.
