INCIDENTS: Citizen awareness is essential.

A NEW campaign has been launched in Torremolinos with the aim of encouraging citizens to report hate crimes directed at the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered) community.

The campaign, ‘You report, it benefits all of us’, has been launched in the hopes of reducing the frequency of these kinds of incidents in Torremolinos, and places special emphasis on making LGBT individuals feel more comfortable with the idea of coming to the authorities if they find themselves involved in situations of abuse and assault.

Santiago Rubio, president of COLEGA Torremolinos, a prominent LGBT association, has stated that 78 per cent of LGBT people who are victims of hate crimes do not report the incidents, making citizen awareness and proper training of police officers absolutely essential.
