Ovation of the Sea at dock in Gibraltar.
IN A busy few days for the port, not one but two vessels operated by the Royal Caribbean International cruise line called into Gibraltar.
The Ovation of the Seas, which is the largest cruise ship to ever dock at Gibraltar, made its inaugural call on May 7. Measuring 348 metres in length, with a gross tonnage of 169 thousand tonnes, it carries 1,300 crew members who look after 4,905 passengers.
Tourism Minister Samantha Sacramento said its presence was “a wonderful business opportunity for local trade and commerce.” She said the visit by Ovation of the Seas was further proof that Gibraltar is being transformed into a leading cruise port of call in the western Mediterranean.
The Ovation was closely followed by the Jewel of the Seas, which is almost half the size, having been built in 2004, but its captain, crew and 2,500 passengers were also welcomed to the Rock.
