THE Guardia Civil have arrested 17 people under charges of conspiracy, fraud, forgery and money laundering, who are suspected of offering fraudulent mobile phone contracts to thousands of people in Jaen, Almeria and Huelva.
A total of 224 mobile phones worth approximately €70,000, 890 sim cards, six computers, two hard drives and €6,000 in cash were also seized during raids in Rus (Jaen), Roquetas de Mar (Almeria) and Jabugo (Huelva).
The gang targeted sales professionals, offering discounted rates and cheap phones, with interested parties required to submit personal details plus bank account numbers and statements.
Once these had been obtained, members of the posse working in mobile phone shops created false portability requests, for which they obtained commission, and new phones which were subsequently sold in a shop located in Rus, and on two websites.
In many cases the victims had no idea that they were making monthly payments for new terminals because no invoices were received and the amount paid corresponded with that agreed.
