FALSE ALARM: The Balcon de Europa was off limits for almost two hours

A SOUTH KOREAN tourist provoked an almighty hullabaloo in Nerja on Tuesday, July 19, after she left her suitcase strapped to a public bench, leading to the evacuation of the emblematic Balcon de Europa.

The town council confirmed that they received notice of an unattended piece of luggage from a local business owner at around 2.30pm, leading to the conclusion that it might be a “suspicious package.”

They immediately alerted police, who moved into the area alongside agents from TEDEX, the specialist Spanish security branch trained in deactivation of explosive artefacts, with the two teams working swiftly to evacuate the surrounding area as they followed standard security protocols.

Hundreds of people were forced to leave the crowded terraces, with the tourist hotspot remaining in lockdown until 4.30pm.

Amidst the madness, the red-faced Korean had appeared to claim her baggage, claiming that the case was hers and that she just wanted to leave it in a safe place while she grabbed a bite to eat, as she was passing through the coastal resort on her way to Granada.

Police eventually returned the hapless holidaymaker’s luggage, and she was not charged with any crime.
