British tourist stabbed to death in Ayia Napa

George Low.

A YOUNG British tourist was killed in the popular Cypriot party resort of Ayia Napa after an apparent row with local men on Sunday morning turned violent.

Cyprus police and the Foreign Office have confirmed that 22-year-old George Low died after being stabbed in the neck, while his friend Ben Barker sustained serious injuries in the confrontation.

A spokesman for Cyprus police has identified the two alleged attackers as Mehmet Akpinar, 22, and Sali Ahmet, 42, and warrants have been issued for their arrest.

One of the men’s girlfriends appeared in court on Wednesday and relayed how she helped her boyfriend change clothes after the assault, and that she believed the row began when the British men were spotted urinating in the street.

Police are appearing for locals to come forward with any information as to the suspects’ whereabouts, but there are fears that the two may have slipped across the border into the Turkish Cypriot Republic on the northern side of the island.

Cyprus has been divided between Greek and Turkish control since 1974 and Greek Cypriot police have no jurisdiction in Turkish territory.
