THE Guardia Civil has netted yet another huge haul of illegal weapons, this time arresting a 48-year-old man in Sevilla and seizing assault weapons, ammunitions and explosives.
Working with the German police, the officers became aware of a resident in the town of Dos Hermanas who seemed to be involved with the importation and sale of illegal weapons from eastern Europe and lived in an isolated area in a secluded property.
It became obvious as the investigation progressed that the man was importing weapons, many of them supposedly made unusable, and was then rehabilitating them so that they could be fired. In addition he was also producing ammunition for use with the weapons.
When the Guardia Civil raided the house, they found more than 100 firearms including AK47 assault rifles and machine guns, most of which were ready to be used, 8,000 cartridges of various calibres and hand grenades as well as other explosives and detonators.
In addition to the weapons and explosives, the man had a collection of different items of machinery, all of which could be used in the rehabilitation of the firearms and for manufacturing ammunition.
The arrested man was charged with a variety of crimes connected with the illegal possession and sale of firearms, explosives and ammunition as well as endangering public health.
A Guardia Civil press release has highlighted the fact that in the past five years, in a total of 20 operations, 152 people have been arrested with the seizure of more than 2,250 firearms of all types and nearly 275,000 cartridges all of which could have been used by terrorist or criminal organisations.
