UPDATE: It now appears that four people including the driver of the Portuguese train operated by Comboios de Portugal were killed when it struck a bridge near a bend in the track as well as a signal box and 49 have been injured although most managed to walk away from the train with minor injuries,
WHILST information is sparse, it is clear that there has been a major derailment of a passenger train travelling from Vigo in Galicia to Portugal near to the town of O Porriño at 9.30am on the morning of September 9.
The train operator Renfe confirmed the accident in a tweet and expressed its condolences to victims and their families as it appears that there have been at least two fatalities and several injuries. Emergency services are attending and accident investigators will no doubt be on the scene at an early juncture.
