ALTEA’S new beach between the Algar rivermouth and seafront car park, needs a name.
The public was invited to vote for a shortlist of five names chosen by the town hall that was posted on the alteasurvey.digiworks.ovh website.
The candidates – Clot de Mingot, L’Espigo, Font de Pesaria, L’Astillero, and Calafat – refer to landmarks and memories linked to the beach area, but locals complained that provision should have been made for their own suggestions.
These included Gasthoff, in memory of Altea’s first hotel in Plaza de Europa, while others wanted to honour the now defunct but once immensely popular pub, Meneo.
Historians suggested Playa del Desembarco because it was here that Archduke Charles disembarked in 1705, unsuccessfully challenging the house of Borbon for the Spanish crown. Others went for simplicity itself and suggested that Playa Nueva was the perfect name for a new beach.
Voting finished Thursday, September 22, and the name most voted was Playa L’Espigo with 887 votes.
