PEGO: Interior of the 18th century chapel.
THE Alicante Diputacion will foot the bill for repairs to Pego’s Ecce Homo chapel. The octagonal dome and roof of the 18th century building, a symbol of the Pego skyline, were badly damaged by torrential rain and lost countless tiles in early November last year.
Repairs to the blue-glazed dome began in January and initially, members of the town’s Ecce Homo Brotherhood tried to cover the 100,000 euros from their own pockets and through local appeals.
The Diputacion, similar to a county council, has now pledged 65,000 euros to finish the restoration, which is expected to take another five months. “We needed to act without delay owing to the bad state of the dome,” said Bernabe Cano, head of the Diputacion’s Municipal Improvements section and also La Nucia mayor.
