MORE than 77 people have been injured, many of them seriously, following a huge gas explosion in a Velez-Malaga cafe.
Five people are being treated for severe injuries as more than 50 were taken to the Regional Hospital of Axarquia with cuts and bruises. No fatalities have been reported and dozens have since been released from care.
The exact cause of the blast remains unclear but the accidental ignition of gas cylinders is believed to be responsible for the catastrophe, which occurred at La Bohemia in the town centre as it prepares for the San Miguel festival.
There has been significant material damage to surrounding properties but fortunately quick-thinking staff had seen the fires early and evacuated the premises.
