The town hall of Velez-Malaga is waiting for reports from the emergency services to determine whether the explosion, which left 90 people injured, was avoidable.
The mayor, Antonio Moreno, pointed out that the situation could have been “a lot worse” due to people gathering in the area for the local feria. He thanked local firefighters, police officers and volunteers for their rapid response, praising their coordination in the face of widespread panic.
The cafeteria La Bohemia is a local establishment and isn’t part of the travelling feria and so a thorough local investigation will be started to find out how the explosion occurred.
The celebrations continued on Sunday as none of the injured were in life-threatening condition.
